Description

Social inequality in education. Epistemological issues on sociology of education. Statistical correlation between school performance and students’ socio-cultural origin and provenance. Schools as institutions. Relation between school and society, via international and domestic examples. Relation between performance and inherent skills. Concepts of meritocracy and equal opportunities. Cultural capital theory (Bourdieu). Theory of language codes (Bernstein). Methods and techniques currently used to investigate the educational practices in the classroom in conjunction with appropriate social phenomena.

Course objectives

  • Students should be able to recognize and acquaint with the basic theories explaining the educational reality and be able to present and analyze the various considerations which have been developed in the scientific field of Sociology of Education
  • Students should be able to understand the social inequalities in education and the link between social origin, cultural and educational capital of pupils-students and school performance
  • Students should be able to reflect upon equal opportunities in education and the intrinsic or non abilities of each pupil-student
