The aims of the English for General Academic Purposes courses are concerned with those communication skills in English which are required for study purposes in formal educational systems. This specific course focuses on study skills in English and more specifically aims to develop skills in basic types of written English, which are necessary for the academic environment. It combines the understanding of texts of various genres and topics, emphasizing on the scientific fields treated by the Department, with the analysis of the characteristics of written language and the production of various types of written language. These include summarizing short academic texts, paraphrasing, describing graphs and charts, synthesizing ideas and arguments, and producing short academic texts. In addition, it helps students develop the language and social skills needed when looking for a job or continue their studies at postgraduate level, through writing applications and resumes. The course emphasizes not only on the production of written language but also on the process of its production through the use of appropriate strategies and procedures.
